He runs two copies of the same record on two turntables and stretches the drum break until the dancers find a new way to move. That night is the official starting line for hip-hop, electronic dance music, sampling, mixtape culture, every genre that ever borrowed a break, and every kid who got into music by standing on a corner. The Beatles had a zebra crossing in NW8. Hip-hop had a community room in the South Bronx.
